Rescue groups working with ACDs

This is a work in progress as I get all the rescue groups and contacts or websites together. Remember you can also go to www.PetFinder.com to locate dogs in your area.
Another great resource for rescue can be found at http://www.aucado.us this is a forum run by and participated in by cattle dog people. You will find all kinds of fanciers - from show folk, to herding and working folk, rescue people, everyday people who just love the breed. The forum also has a complete Rescue section -- listing those in dire urgent need, to those whose owners are holding until they find a hew home. Stop in and say hello...we love company and love pictures of your dogs too!! Go to the forum list and see how many places there are to visit!
If you are not able to add another dog to your home or actively volunteer as a foster for a rescue dog, all of these groups can and do accept donations. If you had a special dog in your life that is now over the bridge, why not send a small donation to any of these groups in memory of that special dog?? Believe me, even $10 is greatly appreciated - without these groups, the dogs they help to rehome would simply be another statistic..please help when and where you can. The people and the dogs will always be grateful as the majority depend on us 'animal lovers' to keep them going!!!
Please contact me if you would like to have your group listed on this page. Will list contacts, web sites, etc. both in the USA and other countries.
Contact for all of the dogs listed below is: Linda Watkins; watkins@ridenbaugh.com or call 208-484-2534. Application including references and vet info is required along with home visit. Dogs are not adopted on first-come-first-served basis; we try to ensure the most appropriate home. Pet Adoption Network is a 501(c)3 (IRS designated non-profit, tax exempt) organization. All donations to PAN are tax deductible.
Linda Watkins and her crew of fosters work tirelessly to help Cattle Dogs in the PNW area (Washington and Oregon and oft times other areas as well)
Here is the link to Linda's web page Please bookmark it and do pass her work and information on to those looking to rescue a cattle dog.
BEAVERTON, OR: ZOE is the victim of a broken home; her dad is unable to keep her with him; and her mom is in a small apartment that does not easily accommodate two dogs, especially an active cattle-girl. Zoe would love to be in a moderately active home where she could get in some longer walks; a few weekend hikes and LOTS of ball playing. This sweet girl loves pets and belly rubs and is a happy snuggler as well as an enjoyable companion. Zoe is very typical of her breed and we encourage you to thoroughly research cattle dogs before adding one to your family. Zoe is between 6-7 years old which is early middle age for a cattle dog. She has plenty of energy and zest for life and is not yet ready to become a couch potato. Securely fenced yards (no underground fencing please). Spayed/Neutered • Up-to-date with routine shots • Prefers a home without: cats and children under 5 Adoption fee: $150

SEATTLE, WA: KAGAN is a sweet, mellow girl around 17-18months. She is shy but, loves people if they take it slow with her. Women more than men. She came into the Seattle Animal Shelter as a stray and is somewhat of a "clean slate". She doesn't really know any commands. Kagan appears to have some slight hearing loss, but, it's very selective and we don't know if that is from lack of socialization or she really can't hear everything. She is fine around other dogs but should probably live with a confident male. Cats are only ok under supervision and as with many cattle dogs we don't recommend her for homes with children under 5 years of age. Kagan is not a high drive cattle dog and at this time does not even know how to play with toys but, we think will blossom in the right home. Before adding a cattle dog to your home we strongly suggest that you thoroughly research the breed.

PORTLAND, OR AREA: SIDNEY Handsome Sidney is all about playing, loving, and having fun. He does great with other dogs; is wonderful with people once he gets to know you, and has a busy little mind that is just waiting to soak up all the information you care to share with him. Like all cattle dogs, Sidney is reserved when he first meets you -- part of this is due to age, part his breed. Once he's comfortable and trusts you, he'll be your partner for life. Sidney needs a calm, confident owner who will give him clear and consistent training and guidance; he wants to live in a household where he is clear about his place in the family structure. Sid needs an active home that will provide the mental and physical stimulation he needs. We recommend homes without children under 6; cattle dogs are herding dogs and it's hard for them to resist those fast moving little heels. Australian cattle dogs are a unique breed and even if you've previously lived with an ACD. Spayed/Neutered • Up-to-date with routine shots • Prefers a home without: cats and children under 5
Dogs available for adoption
LEWISTON, ID AREA: MANDY Sweet Mandy has never had a real home until she came to live with her foster mom; before that she was destined to be a puppy factory. Since arriving at her foster home Mandy has learned what it's like to live in a house; she's housetrained; has learned to walk on leash and to come back when called. She's also learned that life can be pretty good when you're in a home where you're loved and wanted. Mandy would be better in a home without young children, and while she's living with another dog and getting along well, we get the impression that she'd be happier as an only dog. Mandy is very typical of her breed and before you decide to add a cattle dog to your home we strongly recommend you thoroughly research the breed. Securely fenced yards (no underground fencing please). Adoption fee $150
SAMMAMISH, WA: GEORGE George been with his family for over three years since he was only four weeks old. He is a wonderfully loyal, intelligent companion, who just loves spending time with his people. He knows several tricks and loves to learn new ones (his favorites are "give me ten" and "spin"). George is an expert frisbee catcher, and loves to swim. He has a tremendous amount of energy, and will pretty much keep going as long as you will. He is crate-trained for both the car and home, although at home he is used to sleeping in his bed; his crate is used for when his people are gone. George is very good with other dogs, but with most other animals he just wants to chase. He is not good with children, and should not be in a home with children under the age of 10. George is very typical of his breed and before you decide to add an Australian cattle dog to your family, we strongly recommend you thoroughly research the breed. Homes with securely fenced yards (no underground fencing please). Adoption fee $150
SEATTLE, WA: LASSIE Lassie came into rescue 10 months ago, suffering from a nervous breakdown after three months in a public shelter. In that time she's grown from a hysterical, frightened little dog, into a bright, funny, high drive little girl. At 33 lbs. Lassie is full of energy -- this girl needs an experienced ACD home, a quiet (preferably rural) environment with firm, consistent guidelines, a regular schedule, and lots of exercise, which she hopes will include some ball playing and swimming, as she loves both. She'd be a great riding or hiking companion. Lassie is a very typical cattle dog: extremely intelligent, slow to trust, demanding, independent, goofy, and affectionate. If you don't give her firm leadership and guidelines, she'll make up her own -- and while she tries hard, most of her choices probably aren't the ones you'd want her to make. Lassie is still working through her PTSD, and gets very stressed when the routines are changed; interested adopters need to be prepared to spend some time getting acquainted with her prior to taking her home. A home with another dog would be o.k. but we recommend a low-key male; Lassie is definitely an alpha female and will try to keep everyone under control. Australian cattle dogs are a unique breed, and we encourage you to do thorough research before adding one to your family -- Homes with securely fenced yards (no underground fences, please). Adoption fee: $150

ADOPTION PENDING

This is MAGGIE who is losing her home due to a new baby; she lives in Everett, WA Interested folks should contact Jessica: angel_jesi@yahoo.com
Maggie about four or five years old (a young 4-5!!) Super sweet and affectionate! She's a very fast learner and knows many commands (sit, stay, down, roll over, here, up, off, drop, leave it, shake, high five, sit pretty, etc) She's fully housetrained, crate trained and excellent off leash. She's an amazing running partner and retriever...in fact I think that's really all she wants to ever do....Ball is a four letter word at our house. The day she drops the ball will be her last. She does well with strangers if ignored..she's intimidated if people come on too strong.
Mags is VERY loyal to me and only me (she's a heeler). The problem is she hasn't quite understood the baby's place in the pack...she thought that she was the baby. She spends all her time herding the baby and trying to nip her...needless to say not good! Since we've had Charlotte I haven't had the time to take her jogging, to the beach or to work with me as often as she needs. Luis got a job as a bank manager and has very little free time. I feel so bad! We moved into a house with a fenced yard which I thought would help things out but she spends her days running the fence, barking at the neighbor's red heeler and digging in Charlie's sand box.
Maggie is a WONDERFUL companion and I love her more than I can say, but I know she deserves better than we can give her. She needs space to run and fetch, freedom to dig and play, a companion (dog/older children?) and we cannot give her that. She's current on all vaccines, microchipped, spayed and heart worm tested (we don't have HW here so we don't treat). I have plenty of Advantage Multi, toys and all manner of leashes and collars. She has a crate and bed that she loves and sleeps in every night with the door open. This just breaks my heart but I know it's the right thing for her. Let me know if you hear something, I will settle for nothing less than a perfect home for my baby.
